A level Results Day 2016Staff and students at our A level Academy are celebrating their first set of fantastic A level results since the Academy first launched in 2014.

St Helens College’s A level Academy achieved an impressive 98.2% overall A level pass rate with all but one subject achieving a 100% pass rate, and a 100% pass rate with high grades (A*- C) in English Language, English Literature and Mathematics with an outstanding 100% pass rate in facilitating subjects including English Literature, Mathematics, History and Biology.

Continuing the success of the A levels, the AS results are also very strong, with more than half the subjects achieving 100% pass rates, and an overall pass rate of 90%, including a 100% pass rate with high grades (A*- C) in individual subjects such as psychology.

Rachel Bell is an aspiring history teacher and has secured a place at University of Chester, she says, “I really love History and knew that studying it at A level would prepare me for university. I’m absolutely made up with my grade B and have been accepted at University of Salford to study History at degree level. I hope to one day become a history teacher.”

Students collected their results from the Town Centre library this morning and were greeted by the head of the A level Academy, Joanne Greenhalgh and teaching staff. Joanne says, “Today marks our first set of A level results and the students have worked extremely hard over the last two years to ensure their success today. We are so proud of what they have achieved and it’s an honour to have guided them to this success over the last two years.”

Gary Shortall is one of the many students celebrating today and has been accepted at Liverpool John Moores, he says, “I’m so happy that I’ve achieved B B B in Law, Business Studies and History. The last two years have been hard but completely worth it. I can’t wait to start university in September studying a degree in Law, so that I can work towards becoming a qualified solicitor.”

St Helens College’s A Level Academy offers a direct route to university, with over 19 subject areas to choose from, smaller class sizes and individualised support from tutors, creating an aspirational learning environment in which students can excel in.

This comes as an additional celebration after St Helens College recently achieved an overall vocational pass rate of 100%. Several students have also achieved triple Distinction star grades (D*D*D*) in their vocational courses, giving them the same UCAS tariff points as those achieving A* grades at A level, and securing their places at first choice universities.

As recently recognised by the Department for Education League Tables as the second best college in the country for vocational value added, St Helens College’s vocational courses allow students to study one subject, full time, enabling them to specialise in their chosen career. They provide a pathway to university, an apprenticeship and also employment.

Katie Parkes studied Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Photography and says, “I'm so proud of my final grades - I achieved D* D* D* which is equivalent to A at A level and secured a place at Swansea University to study BA (Hons) Photography in the Arts. I have loved every minute of the course and can’t wait to take the next step towards my future.”

Emma Brookes will also be heading off to university in September, after achieving D*D*D* in her Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Science qualification. Emma says, “The best thing I ever did was choosing to study Science at St Helens College. It has amazing science facilities, the tutors are so supportive and I feel the course has really prepared me for further study at university. I can’t wait to start my degree at University of Salford and work towards my dream career in podiatry.”

Jette Burford, Principal of St Helens College, says, “We are extremely proud of our students for achieving exceptional results and securing places at some of the top universities in the region.

“These results highlight the hard work and dedication provided by our students and teaching staff, to remain focused on achieving success and to strive beyond expectations. We wish our students the very best of luck for the future and look forward to seeing what next year’s students will achieve."
