Construction students took part in the annual SkillBuild competition recently with four students impressing the judges with their skills to pick up awards.
The students entered the SkillBuild regional heats which was held at Stockport College to showcase their skills across three categories which included: Wall and Floor Tiling, Plastering and Joinery.
Aaron Payton won second place in the Wall and Floor tiling new entrant category while Emma Bracegirgle, proudly took home third.
Emma, from St Helens, was delighted with the win and was eager to praise her tutors saying, “I would like to thank my tutors, especially Liam McArdle for his support and guidance in preparing us in the build up to the competition”.
Alan Orchard, from Manchester won first place in the Wall and Floor tiling senior category followed by Scott Hughes who scooped third place. This is the fourth year in row that St Helens College have dominated this category taking home a win each time.
Alan said “The competition is a great experience to showcase your skills, I really enjoyed competing and was delighted with the win”.
Phillip Hampson, from Walton secured third place in the Plastering heat with Callum Millington coming a close fourth.
Scott Houghton, plastering tutor at St Helens College was keen to praise his successful students, “This competition is such a great showcase and platform for our students. It helps them to gain experience and network with other industry professionals. Our participation in SkillBuild, as well as the skills and knowledge they learn on the courses really does boost the employability of our students, helping them to gain work in the sector. They worked really hard and should be proud of their achievement.”
Tiling tutor, Barry McDermott, was keen to praise the students and all their hard work leading up to the event. Barry said, “To win in the competition for the fourth year running is absolutely outstanding. All the students involved gave their best and I am delighted that we have won the competition again. We now wait to see if the students will achieve a place in the national competition.”
Following the regional heats, the students will now await confirmation to see if they have secured places at the national final which takes place this Autumn.
