Digita lRoots - Image 1Our art students have recently been busy organising an exhibition to celebrate a local digital roots project, a digital art program run by Mako Education in partnership with Make It Happen and St Helens Council.

The digital roots project saw children from across St Helens attend weekly sessions throughout March and April visually recording how they feel about the area they live in, developing skills in digital art, such as Stop-Motion Animation, Music Making, Podcasting, Poster and Logo Design and Green Screen usage.

The sessions culminated with an exhibition of the children’s work at St Helens College with students from the College’s Access to HE Art and Design, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design and the Extended Diploma in Art students who planned, curated, organised, budgeted and produced the one night only exhibition of the children's work. This allowed the students to gain hands-on work experience.

Speaking after the exhibition, programme leader and lecturer in art and design, Amy Robinson, said: “Collaborative projects like this provide a great opportunity for Art and Design students to simulate a real world situation in which they have to respond to the given tasks, organise their time and produce a professionally presented exhibition. These are important employability skill sets that we want to provide for them in preparation for the industry. I could not be more proud of the student’s professionalism in undertaking this assignment.”
