Princes Trust Team 84A cohort of students undertaking the Prince’s Trust Team Programme have spent the last few weeks on their community project, revamping the gardens at local church, Emmanuel Warbreck, in Newton-Le-Willows.

As part of the project, Team 84 undertook fundraising by packing bags at Marks & Spencer’s, raising over £700 to purchase supplies. They were also met with generous discounts from B&Q St Helens, St Helens Skips and Jewson Builders Merchants.

During the project, students refurbished the doors and gates to the building and gave the surrounding gardens a makeover, including planting new plants, cutting back hedges and general maintenance to the overgrown areas around the grave stones, which had been covered for a number of years. In addition to this, the students laid stones to help with puddle and mud control on the path and constructed borders around the perimeter of the church. The grounds maintenance team at St Helens Council, were also on hand to rehome a beehive and provide bark for the raised beds.

Jade Cotter, Prince’s Trust Team Leader, commended the students, saying, “They all worked tirelessly on this project. They looked after all of the elements of the project, from making initial contact with the church, to planning what they would like to do and fundraising to support it. Their team working, organisational, DIY and gardening skills were all put to the test. The transformation has been amazing.”

The project culminated with a handover ceremony with students, their family and the local community enjoying tea and cakes from the congregation of the church. The Revd Valerie Hughes, said, "We are extremely pleased and impressed with what the Prince's Trust Team have accomplished. When they first approached us, we only expected a painted front door, painted gates and the removal of some of the weeds and litter around the grounds. We are over the moon with the amount of work that they have done and to such a high standard."

If you are interested in joining our next Prince’s Trust Team Programme, we are now recruiting for Team 85, starting 25th September 2017.
