Our business staff with guest speaker Karla RimaitisOur level 2 Business students welcomed guest speaker Karla Rimaitis, an experienced NHS worker and alumni Business student, to share her 15 years’ worth of experience working for the NHS; talking all things apprenticeships and employment as well as holding mock job interviews with our students.

The special guest lecture, gave students a perfect insight into a career in the NHS. Not only in nursing, but highlighting alternative roles suited to the student’s studies, including: finance, education, data analyst, administration, social media and more.

The session provided students with an array of beneficial employability tips, including how to apply for a job, understanding job applications, job descriptions and person specification, as well as helping students to grow their CV’s by recognising their transferable skills.

Mock job interviews were carried out with the students in order to help familiarise them with the interview process, and get them to grips with the types of questions and behaviours they could expect from the experience.

Student Jade Palfrey, commented: “I really enjoyed the experience, I found it very useful and interesting. It was helpful to find out new information about the NHS and the different job opportunities they offer.”

Karla, who carried out the session, now works as a Talent for Care Programme Facilitator for Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS. She started her career studying here at St Helens College on the Business Administration course, before taking up her first role with Bridgewater as a Business Administrator.

After 15 years working for the company, she explains how she’s progressed in her role over the years, gaining herself extra qualifications along the way and now finds herself working for the Education team. She highlighted to students the versatility of obtaining a business qualification and the wide scope of career possibilities it can lead to.

Speaking to Karla about the session, she commented: “It was a great opportunity to work with St Helens College and to meet potential candidates for our trust. The students were fully engaged in the question and answer sessions, which is a great platform for us to showcase what we have on offer and our excellent benefits as an employer.”

She added: “Holding mock interviews are a great way for us as an employer to gain an understanding of the current curriculum and to see what skills we could expect students and new candidates to have.”

Business lecturer, Andrea Waggott, finished by adding: "It is always beneficial for our students to meet local employers as they start to think about their future career directions. This event with the NHS, focussing on business careers, proved to be very popular with the students, an event we hope to continue as we grow our partnership with the NHS.”
