14 - 16 Academy students all lined up in their construction gear

Students from the St Helens College 14-16 Academy enjoyed a privileged site visit this week courtesy of Seddon Construction.

The students who are all studying BTEC Award in Construction and the Built Environment as part of their vocational options were given a tour of the continuing £5million development work at the College's Technology Campus at Pocket Nook.

Billy McCormack, site manager at Seddon, which is carrying out the development work for the college, said:, "It was a pleasure to be able to show the students the progress being made on site and talk a bit about the various roles within the construction sector while real-life work was being carried out in the background."

"I hope we have been able to inspire these budding builders, surveyors and architects to consider a career in the industry."

The visit was organised by the construction curriculum leader Ste Burrows, who commented: " We feel it's very important that the students get a real world experience which reflects their hard work in the classroom. We have students who are interested in different aspects of construction and thanks to Seddon we have the opportunity to see first-hand how those skills and study are put into real world practice."

The visit took the students through different areas of the Technology Campus site where Billy McCormack talked the students through the stages of the build including health and safety, the building materials used and the different challenges a development of this magnitude inevitably throws up. Highlights of the visit included the new café bistro and library. The afternoon was completed with a quiz where the students could show off what they had learned during the visit.
