Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Animal Care

This course builds upon the skills you have previously gained at level 1 and enhances your knowledge of animal welfare.

You will maintain the welfare of animals including preparing food, feeding, grooming and ensuring animal enclosures remain clean. You will also provide controlled exercise opportunities for animals.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

What will I study?

During this course, you will study various units such as:

  • Promote and maintain the health and wellbeing of animals
  • Deliver basic treatments to animals
  • Select and prepare accommodation for animals
  • Maintain animal accommodation
  • Control and restrain animals
  • Move animals between locations
  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Provide controlled exercise opportunities for animals
  • Provide opportunities for animals to have freedom to exercise
  • Welcome, receive and care for visitors to sites
  • Prepare feed for animals
  • Provide feed and water to animals

How is it assessed?

During your course, you will be assessed through a combination of presentations, coursework, practical observations and poster work.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have five GCSEs at grade 3 (equivalent to grade D) or above, including English or maths.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. As part of your study programme, you will work towards achieving your qualifications in English and maths.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2018), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. For more information, please click here.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to progress on to the level 3 diploma to further enhance your skills and knowledge.

Alternatively, you may choose to complete a level 3 apprenticeship or enter employment.
