Level 2 Extended Certificate in Animal Care (Learning for Life)

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

As part of this course you will be working towards an industry recognised qualification, by gaining hands-on experience with a wide variety of species, from small mammals and reptiles, to birds and domestic pets.

This will provide you with the confidence, knowledge and experience needed to secure employment or further studies within animal management.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

During this one year course, you will gain an understanding of the various aspects of animal management through a number of units such as:

  • Animal feeding
  • Animal accommodation
  • Animal handling and behaviours
  • Animal biology
  • Animal health and behaviour
  • Animal conservation

You will study alongside like-minded people in classes delivered by friendly supportive tutors.

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by a combination of written assignments, practical assessments and group work throughout the course.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have five GCSEs at grade 3 (equivalent to grade D) or above, including English and maths.

Alternatively, you may have already achieved a level 1 Animal Care qualification and equivalent qualifications and experience will also be considered.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

This course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to gain employment within the animal management industry.

You'll also have the opportunity to continue your studies by topping up your qualification to a diploma, gaining more advanced knowledge and skills or a higher level role in the industry.
