FdA Spa Therapies and Management
Programme Specification
Validated By:
University of Central Lancashire

The number of spas has grown exponentially in the last decade to make them an important part of the UK leisure industry, worth up to £70 million a year. In addition, the wellness sector has seen a considerable growth of 9% globally.

To create a successful spa you have to create an inviting and relaxing atmosphere, manage a variety of specialist therapies and run an efficient and profitable business. Most hotel resorts both in the UK and abroad now have their own spas and they are looking for trained professionals with the skills needed to manage them. The foundation degree in Spa Therapies and Management gives you the leadership skills and practical experience you need to be able to manage a spa or start your own spa business.

In addition to your degree studies you will be given the opportunity to study a level 3 Diploma in Aromatherapy or Reflexology with VTCT, providing you with industry based skills that are attractive to prospective employers. This is a valuable opportunity to learn relevant industry skills and this foundation degree will underpin both theoretical and practical content.

Course in-depth

What will I study?

Year 1

In the first year business concepts are explored in spa organisations and how they can achieve profitability. The ageing process is also studied to develop an understanding of the basic anatomy and physiology of the body systems and how these relate to the ageing process. Additionally, the history of the spa is explored and how it evolved into the major international industry that it is today. You will look at diverse massage treatments within the spa industry.

Your work is practically focussed with health and safety forming part of it. You also cover first aid training. Through work on case studies your knowledge of the industry will begin to develop. As the year progresses you will begin to identify your own individual learning styles with the opportunity for you to develop your IT skills, essay writing, note taking and presentation skills.

Year 2

The second year aims to further develop your knowledge and skills. By undertaking a work placement, your skills and confidence will develop and you will achieve professional accreditation recognised within the spa industry. You will look at the global spa industry through research and evaluate the latest innovations within the industry.

You also have the opportunity to develop knowledge of health, safety, hygiene and environmental factors within the spa industry.

Social enterprise is a massive part of the spa therapy industry, as such you are encouraged to establish a business to support the community. It also offers the opportunity to examine the use of current spa equipment and facilities and analyse them in regards to suitability and purpose.

Please note the outline of study detailed above is based on a student studying full-time. The part-time study route encompasses the same outline however is delivered over three years, rather than two years.
