Level 2 Diploma in Barbering Studies

Throughout this course, you will develop the required skills, knowledge and experience to become a successful men's Hairdresser.

Based in our commercial salon, you will enhance your cutting techniques when cutting men's hair and facial hair.

You will also provide client consultations and learn tips on how to successfully promote products to paying clients.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Following health and safety practice in the salon
  • Shampooing and conditioning the hair and scalp
  • Promoting products and services to clients in a salon
  • Cutting men's hair
  • Cutting facial hair
  • Working in the hair industry
  • Displaying stock to promote sales in a salon
  • Styling men's hair
  • Salon reception duties

How is it assessed?

You will be continuously assessed throughout the course and are required to complete your assessments on a commercial client (paying customer). At the start of your course, you will practice the skills on friends and family members, following this, you will be required to bring clients in for your assessments. You will build a portfolio of evidence which will be submitted for verification.

Attendance is compulsory on this course as all of the units are carried out within the first term. Attending all units will help you to achieve in your exams.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You will should have four GCSEs at grade 3 (equivalent to grade D) or above, including English and maths.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2019), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have successfully completed this course, you are eligible to become a graduate State Registered Barber (SRB) with The Hairdressing Council.

There's a wide range of career opportunities as a Junior Men's Hairdresser within:

You will also have the opportunity to develop your skills further by undertaking specialist qualifications at level 3, including:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
  • Level 3 Certificate in Barbering

Additional Information

As part of this programme you are required to wear a uniform (tunic), which will be worn with black trousers or a skirt and a full black shoe. There is also a kit required to complete your assessments which can be purchased from a recommended supplier. You may be eligible for a bursary to cover these costs.
