Level 1 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills

Grow your skills as you work practically on the green areas in and around St Helens College and at Sherdley Park.

You will learn how to use gardening tools, how to prepare, feed and water plants, how to apply mulch correctly, and much more.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Preparing grounds for seeding or planting
  • Planting container grown subjects
  • Applying organic mulch to a bed or border
  • Water a bed, border or area of plants in containers
  • Using hand-held equipment i.e. hedge trimmers, strimmers, lawn mowers
  • Soil testing (PH)
  • Creating hanging baskets
  • Plant identification

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by project work and practical demonstrations. There are no formal exams.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

There are no formal entry requirements.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2017), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. For more information, please click here.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

After you have completed this course, you could move onto a level 2 qualification or you might decide to look for a job in the industry.
