A Guide to Car Maintenance Course

DIY car maintenance has become increasingly popular for car owners who now carry out routine maintenance and vehicle repairs.

This short, part-time course is designed for both the inexperienced car owner and the regular car enthusiast and provides simple tuition to develop the essential skills required to safely carry out routine maintenance and repairs to vehicles.

The course will cover the general requirements to safely carry out routine maintenance and repair of motor vehicles including tyre checks, wiper blades, brakes, oil and filter changes and routine servicing. You will also gain an understanding of the MOT Testing process and what checks can ensure that a vehicle is safe for the road.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course starts on Wednesday 25th April 2018. You will attend College every Thursday from 4.00pm - 9.00pm for 8 weeks.

The course takes place in our Automotive Hub at the STEM, Centre, Technology Campus, WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

The aim of the course is to give you a good introduction to car maintenance. You will use industry standard machinery and equipment in a safe and secure work environment.

The following topics will be covered during the course:

  • How to remove and refit a road wheel if you get a flat tyre
  • How to change wiper blades
  • How to change light bulbs
  • How to change your own brakes
  • How to complete oil and filter changes
  • Understanding the MOT testing process and the checks involved to ensure a vehicle is safe
  • Completing weekly safety vehicle checks
  • Understand the signals and signs that your car will give to highlight maintenance requirements

You must bring your own safety shoes/boots. These are not provided but must be worn at all times.

How is it assessed?

There is no formal assessment. The course is aimed to increase your own knowledge of the subject matter.

You will receive instruction and training on a one-to-one basis, tailored to your own level of understanding. The tutor will ask you what your interests are in advance of the course so they can understand your individual requirements.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

There are no formal entry requirements. However, a keen interest in motor vehicles and improving your skills would be beneficial.
