IMI Level 3 Award in MOT Test Centre Management

The Institute of the Motor Industry is the professional body for individuals working in the motor industry. This course is for individuals who wish to run an MOT Vehicle Testing Station (VTS), or who will have direct responsibility for MOT operations at a VTS in the future.

This course will be of interest to those individuals wishing to set up an MOT testing Station, or who may already be MOT Tester and wish to advance their career further.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course has various start dates throughout the year, you will attend college on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm.

What will I study?

The content of this qualification has been designed to reflect the contents of the National Occupational Standards for MOT Testers.

The content of this course includes:

  • MOTM01 Know how to manage the Legislative and Compliance Requirements of a Vehicle Test Centre
  • MOTM02 Know how to deal with Customer Service Problems within a Vehicle Test Centre
  • MOTM03 Understand how to Develop and Supervise Staff within a Vehicle Test Centre
  • MOTM04 Understand Vehicle Test Centre Quality Systems and Quality Audits

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed through an externally marked online exam under invigilation.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, the DVSA will check its criteria when you apply to become an MOT Manager. It is therefore important that you check you meet the requirements on the website.

  • Have no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade, or involving acts of violence or intimidation
  • Be of good repute
  • Must be able to read and speak English

This qualification specification is only available in the medium of English. The MOT Testing Manual, MOT Testing Guide and other published documents are a key source of information and are also only available in English. You must be conversant in English language prior to undertaking these qualifications.

Note: Bi-lingual dictionaries are allowed to be used during assessment.
