Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts

This advanced course is fast-paced and energetic, helping you to gain a realistic insight into the industry, as well as taking an important step towards your future career or progression on to university or drama school.

You will work in our theatres, dance studios and drama workshop areas.

St Helens College is situated between Liverpool and Manchester, so you will be perfectly placed near prestigious performance venues such as The Everyman Theatre in Liverpool and MediaCity in Manchester. Closer to home, you will also have the opportunity to take part in activities organised by The Heart of Glass, a new £1.5m project created to develop all aspects of the Arts in St Helens.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and offers a one-year, 90-credit diploma route or a two-year, level 3 extended diploma route.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following through a range of practical classes, workshops and group seminars:

  • Applying acting styles
  • Audition techniques
  • Developing vocal and movement skills
  • Devising for performance
  • Performing to an audience
  • Historical context of performance

You'll develop a range of transferable skills and techniques that are essential for successful entry into the industry.

How is it assessed?

Much of the assessment will be of a practical nature through performance and class-based development work. This is supported by written assignments.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have five GCSEs at grade 4 (equivalent to grade C) or above, including English or maths and preferably drama.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. But don't worry, if you haven't got the desired grades, we will still have a course available for you.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2018), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. For more information, please click here.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

The course provides excellent preparation for progression on to university or drama school.

You may choose to follow in the footsteps of our previous students who have gone on to work professionally within many areas of the industry.

Whether starting your own dance company, working in TV and theatre, touring the world as a cabaret artist, being offered a scholarship at the New York Film Academy, or even becoming a performing arts teacher yourself, this course could be the first step towards your big break.
