Beginners' Short Course in Photography

Whether you are new to taking photographs or a keen amateur, this introductory course covers basic digital photography, through the means of a bridge or DSLR camera. Both indoor and outdoor photography is explored in studio spaces, in and around the college premises as well as a variety of external locations (location shoots).

You will learn introductory level technical skills in camera handling, learn about exposure control - aperture, shutter speed, ISO, compositional technique and explore different lighting types to create visually interesting imagery. Furthermore, you will learn how to apply basic post editing techniques to your images through Adobe Photoshop.

Please be advised, the types of tasks delivered will vary as they are very much determined by the time of year - light availability and weather permitting, therefore each terms delivery will differ slightly.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course has start dates throughout the year and will take 10 weeks to complete.

The course takes at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus.

What will I study?

You will study photography using a range of materials techniques and processes including an introduction to basic digital photography, DSLR camera operation, basic editing and various projects designed for beginners.

You will need to bring the following with you during the course:

  • Digital SLR camera or Bridge camera with MASP functions
  • Memory card for your camera
  • Card reader
  • Memory drive / USB pen
  • Tripod

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

There are no formal entry requirements. As with all our leisure courses the main emphasis is to come along and enjoy the course. All you need is commitment and enthusiasm.

The total cost of the course is £130.00.
