The HNC Applied Chemistry has been designed for those who would like to develop their scientific skills and knowledge before progressing onto a higher level qualification such as a HND or Foundation degree. Alternatively, upon successful completion of the HNC, you may decide to move into employment in the applied and analytical chemistry sector. On the programme you will study a range of modules covering the development of laboratory management, laboratory techniques, organic and inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry, allowing you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the essential facts, concepts, principals and relevant theories.

What will I study?

The HNC Applied Chemistry covers a mixture of theoretical and practical chemistry. It will develop knowledge and understanding of the essential facts, concepts, principles and theories relevant to the science industry and are required to complete the following core modules:

  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Physical Chemistry
  • Chemistry Laboratory Techniques
  • Work-based project for Applied Science Investigation
  • Analysis of Scientific Data and Information
  • Analysis of Scientific Data and Information
  • Inorganic Chemistry of Crystal Structures and Transition Metal Complexes
  • Organic Chemistry of Aromatic and Carbonyl Compounds
  • Physical Chemistry of Kinetics, Equilibria, Spectroscopy and Surface Chemistry

How will I study?

Students are required to attend on a part-time basis over a two-year period. Flexible study modes are available, including a day release option.

How will I be assessed?

All units on the HNC Applied Chemistry are assessed using a range of methods, including coursework, exams, group projects, presentations and posters.
