Level 2 Certificate in Activity Leadership (Sports Coaching)

With this course, you'll learn how to coach general skills and techniques, as well as focusing specifically on football and rugby.

You'll also learn how to plan and run your own sessions, and how training conditions the body - essential knowledge for any good coach.

St Helens College has a strong partnership with St Helens Rugby League Club. You'll be able to visit Langtree Park and gain fantastic experience from training sessions and coaching masterclasses.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Coaching basic skills and techniques
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the principles of attack and defence
  • Planning, conducting and evaluating a series of sessions
  • Ensuring the health and safety of players and others within the coaching environment
  • Promoting and establishing positive working relationships and high standards of behaviour
  • Developing an awareness and understanding of child protection issues and procedures

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed through a combination of assignments, questions and projects.

All students will be required to undertake at least 50 hours voluntary coaching and undertake two observations during that period.

Placements must be for children between the ages of six and 12.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have four GCSEs at grade 3 (equivalent to grade D) or above, including English and maths.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. As part of your study programme, you will work towards achieving your qualifications in English and maths.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2018), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. For more information, please click here.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll have the opportunity to progress on to the level 3 NCFE Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity.

Alternatively, you could enter the sports industry working as a small-sided team coordinator or football development officer, in youth work or even the armed forces or progress onto a level apprenticeship.
