Level 2 Certificate in Activity Leadership (Sports Coaching)

During this course, you will learn what it takes to become a successful sports coach. You will develop essential coaching skills and techniques, with the opportunity to specialise in football and rugby.

A key part of this course is also understanding how to plan and run your own sessions, which you will experience during work placements with children between the ages of six and 12.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Coaching basic skills and techniques
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the principles of attack and defence
  • Planning, conducting and evaluating a series of sessions
  • Ensuring the health and safety of players and others within the coaching environment
  • Promoting and establishing positive working relationships and high standards of behaviour
  • Developing an awareness and understanding of child protection issues and procedures

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed through a combination of assignments, questions and projects.

All students will be required to undertake at least 50 hours voluntary coaching and undertake two observations during that period.

Placements must be for children between the ages of six and 12.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have four GCSEs at grade 3 (equivalent to grade D) or above, including English and maths.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2019), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. For more information, please visit our dedicated financial support page.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll have the opportunity to progress on to the level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity.

Alternatively, you could enter the sports industry working as a small-sided team coordinator or football development officer, in youth work or even the armed forces or progress on to a level apprenticeship.
