St Helens College - March 2019 Newsletter

The animal management department have their hands full incubating and monitoring four, week-old red-footed tortoise eggs, a species of tortoises native to northern South America! The extraordinary tortoises are the offspring of residents, Strawberry and Shaun, and will be incubated under consistent conditions for four months until they are ready to hatch. Strawberry, the mother of the four eggs, was originally bred over 12 years ago by our very own Animal Management Tutor, Mike, when he used to work as a Zookeeper at Knowsley Safari Park! Our level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management students, Chloe and Hannah, are currently learning about goat maintenance, as part of their animal health module. This involved giving our resident goat, Billy, a bit of TLC with some hoof maintenance! Billy is a Bagot goat, which is one of the UK’s most endangered breeds. He has called the animal unit his home for nearly two years now and was originally donated to us by Northop College. Excited Staff and Students Await New Arrivals Pampering Session with Billy www.sthelens.ac.uk 14 ANIMAL MANAGEMENT
