Engineering Apprenticeship

"I would definitely encourage young people to complete an apprenticeship, especially in high demand areas such as engineering or science."

Sam Hurst

Engineering Manager at NGF Europe (NSG Group), Sam Hurst, began his career in engineering as an apprentice with St Helens College and Waterside Training.

Today, Sam works within the NGF Europe branch of the NSG Group of Japan. The global organisation is one of the world's leading manufacturers of glass products for buildings, vehicles and computers. In his current role as an Engineering Manager, Sam is responsible for his own team of 13 electrical and mechanical tradesmen.

St Helens College has a dedicated team apprenticeship providing the training needed to successfully complete apprenticeship programmes within a variety of industries. Apprenticeships allow people aged between 16-24 years old the chance to earn, learn and gain relevant industry experience and qualifications.

Sam, who completed his engineering apprenticeship with St Helens College and Waterside Training, said, “I would definitely encourage young people to complete an apprenticeship, especially in high demand areas such as engineering or science. There is a lot of support available in each of these areas for those seeking a career in these fields.”

Alec Robinson, Head of Department for Engineering, said “Sam’s success is down to the hard work and determination which he has carried with him from his apprenticeship days and throughout his career. Apprenticeships are a brilliant way to break into the industry. They also help young people to develop work experience and gain independence, whilst also having the strong support of the College in training.”

Following his apprenticeship, Sam went on to achieve outstanding goals in his professional development. He was sponsored by NGF Europe as a Process Development Engineer, through his HNC in Mechanical Engineering and eventually his degree. He said, “I enjoy the variety of work and the technical challenges that my career brings. I’ve also had the opportunity to travel the world because of my career in engineering. I would definitely promote the apprenticeship route and the engineering industry to young people as it can create amazing career opportunities as well as leading to higher education.”
