The course provides experienced sports massage therapy practitioners with the requisite understanding and complex skills and techniques to work as an advanced sports massage practitioner.

During the launch Paul Sculthorpe received a special sports massage from staff and was given a tour of the college’s impressive sports massage clinic.

Eddie Barker, Curriculum Manager for Health Sciences at the College, spoke about the delivery of the course, “We are honoured to be one of the few colleges in the UK to deliver this qualification. It’s the perfect course for experienced practitioners within the sport and active leisure industry to develop their understanding and skills to prepare, apply and evaluate a range of complex sports massage/soft tissue methods to prevent and manage injuries.”

Paul Sculthorpe added “It is great that St Helens College has launched this new course. From my playing days, sports therapy massage was crucial in making sure that I could recover well and get ready for the next match. In fact I still use it now to make sure I am in good shape. I wish the college and the students every success with this course.”

The level 5 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy will enable practitioners to work with non-acute recent injuries and pre-existing conditions for restorative and corrective purposes, with focus on posture, gait, ligamentous and neural conditions. This may include working in clinics for sporting teams or as a mobile therapist, in both an employed or self-employed context.

The sixth month course launches in January 2017 and will be delivered at the Town Centre Campus within the brand new sports massage therapy rooms with the latest equipment.
