Students working towards their degree at St Helens College are some of the most satisfied students in the country, placing St Helens College as the highest-ranking further education college offering higher education in the Liverpool City Region, Merseyside and Cheshire. That’s according to the latest results from the National Student Survey (NSS), published today.

The results of this year's National Student Survey (NSS), highlights overall student satisfaction of 85% at St Helens College. This was above the sector average of 84% but also topped the levels of satisfaction reported at all of the other general further education colleges in the Liverpool City Region and Cheshire.

St Helens College has a long history of offering degree level, higher education courses, and in September 2015 officially launched University Centre St Helens in a bid to raise awareness of educational opportunities in the community and help remove some of the barriers people face when considering studying higher education, making university study accessible to all.

The National Student Survey (NSS) asks final year students at all UK universities and colleges to rate their experiences of higher education at their chosen university or college. They are questioned on the quality of their course, the facilities they use and how they have been supported in their personal development, with their answers used to help prospective students to make informed choices on the best place to study.

Other highlights included 96% of students saying that they were satisfied that staff are good at explaining things, while 91% of students were satisfied with teaching on their course and 89% of students satisfied with the academic support they received. Additionally, University Centre St Helens’ foundation degree in Exercise, Health and Fitness degree achieved 100% overall satisfaction.

Victoria Roberts, Vice Principal at University Centre St Helens said: "These results are so important because they are one of the main ways we can see what our students think of their time at University Centre St Helens. It highlights what we are doing well and where we can work harder to make sure they have the best experience possible. To see such consistently high levels of satisfaction across all areas reflects our commitment to providing students the opportunity to obtain a first class undergraduate education.”

Students complemented the excellent and inspiring lecturers, “The standard of teaching from the business management team has been exceptional. Tutors are incredible and an absolute asset to the institution. They are engaging, professional, friendly and work tirelessly to make sure that all students achieve.” Smaller class sizes were also credited with enhancing the supportive learning environment, “Smaller class sizes allow more one-on-one time with staff. Staff get to know students interests and offer advice regularly.”

University Centre St Helens offers students the opportunity to obtain a first class undergraduate education in a personalised learning environment. With small but expanding, specialist provision allows degree students to not only foster a sense of individuality but to reap the rewards of a concentrated teaching and learning experience. Degree courses on offer include a wide variety of full honours and foundation degrees in the Creative Arts, Social Sciences, Business and STEM subjects offered through its strong links with the Liverpool John Moores University, University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and University of Chester. This ensures students graduate with a prestigious qualification, validated by a major university.

The NSS results have been published just as University Centre St Helens gears up for students applying for a university place through Clearing. With some places still available on degree courses, it is urging prospective students that it is not too late to join University Centre St Helens to start a degree course this September and to get in touch sooner rather than later by calling the Clearing hotline on 0800 027 1221 to secure a place or visiting www.sthelens.ac.uk/clearing.
