Nathan Holland

Apprentice Software Test Engineer

"The college has supported me throughout my apprenticeship with regular meetings in the work place and support with college assessments."

Nathan HollandSt Helens College apprentice, Nathan Holland, has proudly progressed his way through the first 12 months of his apprenticeship with ICC Solutions Ltd, gaining himself impressive work experience in Cincinnati, USA.

After secondary school Nathan planned on studying A levels to fulfil an ambition of achieving qualifications needed to gain himself a place at university to study Architecture.

However, after 3 months, Nathan decided that studying for A levels wasn’t suited to him and took the decision to leave. With some help from St Helens College, Nathan quickly secured himself an IT Apprenticeship with ICC Solutions.

As someone who learns from practical participation, Nathan quickly realised how an apprenticeship training programme was a better option for him, proven by his successful progression that he made since starting his apprenticeship. Although Nathan admits the change was daunting for him at first, he quickly became part of the team.

Speaking of this experience, Nathan said, "Upon starting my apprenticeship, I was surrounded by adults who were working to pay their mortgage and provide for their families. It felt very strange to be in a place full of people with such big responsibilities when I have never had any. I had to meet with the CEO and Customer Relationship Director which was very daunting. However, I soon felt more comfortable as people introduced themselves and I was able to realise that I would be treated as a working man rather than someone on work experience."

Nathan took up the role of an apprentice software test engineer, working as part of a team of seven to ensure that any software produced by ICC Solutions Ltd, is easy to use and bug free. Nathan carries out test cases and has to ensure all testing is recorded for future reference.

He added, "I am enjoying my apprenticeship because it allows me to tackle and overcome new challenges on a daily basis. I also get to work with industry leading professionals who I can learn so much from."

Nathan is proud of the progression he has made since joining ICC Solutions Ltd and has been rewarded with some fantastic opportunities. During his latest appraisal, Nathan was congratulated on the progress he has made within the team and reassured he was meeting all expectations.

Once his apprenticeship is complete, Nathan is hopeful that he will secure permanent employment with ICC Solutions to further his career as a software tester.

Nathan said, "The college has supported me throughout my apprenticeship with regular meetings in the workplace and support with college assessments. Finding the right apprenticeship is key, so I’d advise those interested in an apprenticeship to ensure that the employer has a good reputation and that they are prepared to commit to everything that an apprenticeship entails."
