Jerlyn Winstanley

ITQ level 1, 2 and 3 and HNC Computing and Systems Development

Adult student, Jerlyn Winstanley, has progressed on to the HNC Computing and Systems Development course at University Centre St Helens after completing several courses at St Helens College.

Jerlyn, 31, originally from the Philippines has always had a keen interest in computing from a young age. After relocating to the UK five years ago, she felt she lacked the confidence and the competitive edge employers would be looking for.

As a mum of three, having the flexibility to study around her busy lifestyle was an important factor. Commenting on her experience at St Helens College, Jerlyn said, “I was really keen to gain some formal qualifications so I began to make some enquires for local IT courses and found a number of courses at St Helens College that offered me the flexibility to study around my work and family commitments and help me achieve my personal goals”.

Jerlyn enrolled onto the level 1 ITQ course and gradually progressing through to complete level 3. ITQ courses allow you to learn new computer skills and gain a valuable, recognised qualification. Learning is at your own pace and you are fully supported by friendly tutors. Perfect for both absolute beginners who just want to broaden their knowledge or, those who want to build upon existing skills to gain a practical qualification that is attractive to employers.
Before starting the course Jerlyn felt nervous at the thought of going back into education, she said, “I wasn’t sure if I would fit in and I was a bit sceptical on whether I would finish the course on time. However, I received lots of encouragement on the course, it was a really welcoming environment, the tutors gave me lots of reassurance and I made lots of new friends.”

Alongside completing her ITQ courses, Jerlyn enjoyed College so much that she also completed the level 2 in Business Administration, level 1 AAT Access Award in Accounting and the prestigious Microsoft Office Specialist Exams.

Jerlyn’s passion has always been IT and Computing and to work as a Systems Administrator. With this newfound confidence, in September 2016, Jerlyn enrolled onto the HNC Computer and Systems Development course studying part-time on an evening. The HNC Computing and Systems Development course is suitable for those who would like to progress from a level 3 qualification in Computing or ITQ, or those already working in the industry who would like to build their understanding of key concepts in computing.

It provides students with the flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for future studies and career progression in computing and systems development. It equips you with the skills needed to function effectively in the business world in the provision of computing and IT systems for the support of the information requirements of organisations.

Jerlyn has since gained employment at St Helens College 14-16 Academy alongside her HNC studies.

If you're interested in studying for an ITQ qualification we offer three levels, level 1, level 2 and level 3. The courses are extremely flexible with start dates throughout the year. Learning takes place at your own pace so regardless at how quickly you learn, you will feel comfortable. On this course you are fully supported and guided by friendly, helpful tutors.
