Flavio FerreiraFlávio Ferreira, 20, originally from Portugal is a shining example of why progressing internally to study for your degree at University Centre St Helens is a great way to gain a university experience that gives you the opportunity to obtain a first-class undergraduate education in a personalised learning environment.

In August 2014, shortly after arriving in St Helens from his native Portugal, Flávio began to explore college courses and options available to him. He attended an enrolment event at St Helens College after being inspired by one of the College’s advertisements. With his strong interest in media, Flávio enrolled onto the level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production.

Throughout the two years of the course Flávio picked up skills in pre-production, scripting, storyboarding and casting, web design and Photoshop/desktop based skills, enhancing his knowledge in all aspects of media.

Flávio began to take a strong interest in the design and illustration side of the course which determined what he would eventually go on to study at university. Halfway through his course it was time to start thinking about university options. After applying to several different universities and attending open days and receiving offers from all of his choices, Flávio decided on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree at University Centre St Helens. Flávio explains: “I applied to several universities including University Centre St Helens, my decision to stay and progress to University Centre St Helens was simple. I knew the teaching staff, the environment and understood that you get a much more personalised learning environment compared to that of a larger university. Not wanting to move away also played a big part as I live 5 minutes away from St Helens Town Centre.”

In September 2016, Flávio enrolled onto the BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree. The degree reflects the current demands of contemporary graphic design practice offering students the opportunity to explore graphic design through a range of digital and traditional media. The whole ethos of University Centre St Helens is working out perfectly for Flávio allowing him to focus on his studies through smaller class sizes and the personalised approach from lecturers. Flávio says: "The Graphic Design degree was perfect for me because it allowed me to further develop my interest in illustration and design building on what I had already learnt on my level 3 Media course."

Now nearly a third of the way into his degree, Flávio has ambitions start a career in design and illustration and plans take his work abroad, with one day hoping to work in Norway.
