Nicola SmithAdult student, Nicola Smith, 25, successfully secured employment in a local high school as a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Administrator, thanks to successfully completing several business administration courses after deciding upon a career change.

Nicola, first heard about the popular Business Administration courses at St Helens College after talking to her friend who found employment quickly after completing them. Nicola’s friend studied the same course as Nicola the year before and went on to secure a position working in a Doctors Surgery.

Spurred on with the encouragement from her friend, along with the desire of a career change, Nicola attended an adult enrolment and information event where she spoke with tutors about the range of business administration courses on offer.

These courses prepare individuals for a career in business or progression to many other business related courses. Students develop specialised skills and improve their capacity to analyse, communicate effectively with associates, think independently and thrive in work situations.

In a position as a nursery nurse, Nicola decided on a temporary change in job which allowed her to study while continuing to support her family. Since beginning her studies, Nicola has completed several courses including Diploma in Text Processing and level 2 Certificate in Business and Administration.

Following completion of her qualifications, Nicola quickly gained a new job working in a school. Nicola explains: “Since completing the course I have successfully gained employment in a High School in St Helens as a SEN Administrator. I have the responsibility of sorting all of the Learning Support Assistants timetables out to support students with SEN. In the future I would eventually like to have more responsibility in the SEN department and may be even look to go to university.”

Summarising her time at the college, Nicola says it left her feeling like a whole new person. Nicola says, “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at college, the tutors were fantastic, all of the courses are extremely flexible and I left determined to succeed. The courses have given me the skills I needed to progress and do well in a whole new chapter of my life.”
