Student and aspiring Graphic Designer, Ella Price, maps out her future as she makes great progress on her Graphic Design degree, whilst working towards her long-term goal of becoming a successful business owner.

The 19-year old from Wigan, started at St Helens College on the level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design, after completing her GCSEs at Up Holland High School. Despite offers of a place at a wide range of local colleges, Ella selected to study at St Helens College after hearing positive reviews from her brother, who had also previously made the journey from Wigan.

During her time on the level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design, Ella began researching University options, as she was keen to take her learning to the next level. But, being extremely close to her family, Ella knew that she did not want to move too far away. After searching for local Graphic Design degree courses, that would provide her with the flexibility to stay at home, Ella discovered the BA (Hons) Graphic Design at University Centre St Helens. Knowing St Helens was somewhere she felt comfortable, coupled with the draw of lower tuition fees, Ella decided to continue her growth in St Helens and made the natural progression onto University Centre St Helens, where she embarked on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree, with clear hopes of pursuing her true passion for design.

As a new student, Ella also benefited from the unique study enhancement gift, which, for 2017 entry onto the BA (Hons) Graphic Design was Apple vouchers which she used towards buying a brand new Apple Mac to complement her studies. Fully equipped with easily accessible industry specific software, which Ella constantly uses during her degree course, receipt of the study enhancement gift allows Ella to study wherever she likes, whenever she likes.

Now in her second year of the three-year degree, Ella commented: “I am really enjoyed the degree so far, it has allowed me to learn a range of new skills and has given me the opportunity to progress myself to the point where I now undertake some commercial freelance work, making invites, posters and other marketing materials.”

Working with paying clients, Ella has created an array of material, including logos, leaflets and advertisements, developing her expanding portfolio as she works on both her university projects and a selection of live briefs for current clients.

The BA (Hons) Graphic Design has also provided Ella with the opportunity to grow her connections, working on the collaborative exhibition ‘Birth of Club Rugby’, a joint venture between Liverpool Football Club and St Helens Rugby League Football Club. This exclusive opportunity provided Ella with the chance to contribute to the overall project, by way of the creation of designs for the educational packs and activity sheets.

Focused on her future, Ella’s immediate plan is to expand her business, with a long term goal of one day opening an efficient design shop with its own printers. The modular nature of the BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree is allowing Ella to continually develop her skills and gain additional experience, making her dream closer to a reality on a daily basis.
