The popularity of the BBC series ‘Great British Bake Off’, has created a new wave of enthusiasm for Artisan bread and home baking.

Artisan bread is crafted and baked in small batches, rather than being mass-produced. It demands a variety of skills, a knowledge of kneading, fermenting and shaping, together with the essential ingredient of time.

The course will allow you to explore various ingredients and develop craft skills in artisan bread making and encourage you to develop your own creative culinary ideas whilst using quality ingredients.

Whether you are an amateur cook or a food lover, on this enjoyable short course, you will be taught alongside like-minded people by passionate chefs with significant experience.

This course is due to start on Thursday 5th June 2025. You will attend college on Thursday evening from 6.00pm – 9.00pm, for four weeks.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

You will be presented with a range of recipes and some of the breads that you bake may include:

  • Classic breads such as Bloomer, Oat Bread, Malt Loaf
  • Flatbreads such as Naan, Pitta, Maneesh
  • Continental Breads such as Baguettes, Ciabatta, Pain de Savoie
  • Enriched breads such as Brioche, Danish Pastry Lardy Cake

Course participants will be able to develop their awareness of Health and Safety relating to the preparation of food, food safety awareness and stove control, whilst learning logical and coherent methods for bread making.

There is no formal assessment. You will be given feedback based on your progress with suggestions and guidance for areas for improvement.

As with all our leisure courses, the main emphasis is to come and enjoy!

There are no formal entry requirements. The course is suitable for all levels of ability.

You will need to wear strong, flat sensible shoes and bring along an apron, tea towel, and an oven glove.

Please bring along a container to take what you have made home with you.

You may be eligible for funding if you have not recently participated in a similar programme, or received any other recent government funded training.

There are a number of fee options for this course including:

  • If you are unemployed – FREE
  • If you are employed – £40
  • If you are not eligible for funding – £120

The course price is inclusive of all the ingredients that you will need for each session.

You may wish to progress onto an accredited qualification in this subject, which will allow you to practice your skills in the industry.
