More information

We have various start dates throughout the year and the course takes up to one year complete. There is an option to study either during the day or in the evening.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens WA10 1PP.

Functional English provides the basis for effective communication and understanding across the three subject skill areas; speaking and listening, reading and writing. The study of English can broaden your skills and confidence, allowing you to develop skills that help you to get on in life and work.

You will learn to write concisely and with clarity and will apply this knowledge to a number of practical writing tasks, such as article and letter writing.

You will study alongside like-minded people in classes delivered by friendly supportive tutors.

Assessments are flexible and will be undertaken when you are ready.

For all levels, you will need to sit an examination and you will be fully supported by your tutor.

You don’t need any previous qualifications to undertake this course. However, in order to determine the most suitable level of study for your needs, you will undertake an initial and diagnostic assessment prior to entry onto the course.

This course is free to study providing you don’t already hold a grade 4 or above at GCSE level in this subject.

Once you have completed your English qualification you will be able to progress on to the next level. We offer English qualifications all the way up to GCSE level.

It may also mean that you meet the entry criteria for other college or university courses, as well as improving your career prospects by gaining a qualification that is recognised by employers.
