Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery

This course introduces you to the carpentry and joinery work environment within the construction industry. You will learn how to use hand tools as well as portable power tools as you master the art of creating woodworking joints, frames, doors and windows.

You will learn about components and materials, the unloading and storage of timber and sheet materials, and how to put up access equipment and scaffolding.

Aspiring Joiner, Rob, completed this course which helped him to secure a great apprenticeship with established construction company, FSH Group.

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our STEM Centre Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Knowledge of construction technology
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • Maintaining and using carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Preparing and using carpentry and joinery portable power tools
  • Producing woodworking joints

In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to gain some work experience within the construction industry.

During this course, you'll be assessed by a range of practical and online assessments.

You should have three GCSEs at grade 3 or above.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your course when you join us.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. This course is the first step towards becoming a successful Carpenter or Joiner.

You could progress on to the level 2 Technical Certificate in Site Carpentry to enhance your skills and knowledge or alternatively, you could secure an apprenticeship with an employer and earn whilst you learn.
