More information

Classroom-Based Learning Route

This route has start dates (day option and evening option) in September and is classroom based, delivered one day per week in College. You will also spend one day per week on a voluntary work placement within an education setting of your choice. You will need to seek and secure this independently although we can help you with this.

The day route is on a Tuesday, from 9.30am – 3.00pm.

Workplace Learning Route

This route has flexible start dates throughout the year and is mainly assessed in the workplace. You will need to be in paid employment or have a volunteer placement within a school or college supporting children and young people aged 5 to 19 years of age.

The duration of the course is usually one year, however, on this work-based learning route, you may complete earlier. At the beginning of the course you will be assigned an assessor who will work with you throughout the programme.

More information can be provided upon application.

You will develop the theoretical understanding gained from a range of units, including:

  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Help improve own and team practice in schools
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Support children and young people’s health and safety
  • Support children and young people’s positive behaviour

You will be fully supported by your tutor/assessor during delivery sessions. You will link the theory that has been taught on the course to your practical work in the form of direct observation case studies, activities, reflective logs, diaries and practice files.

During the course you will build an online portfolio of evidence and will need access to a laptop or PC.

No formal qualifications are necessary, although you may find having a relevant level 1 qualification beneficial.

The total cost of this course is £633. You may be eligible for funding depending on your personal circumstances and subject to a fee assessment during the enrolment process. For further details, please visit our financial support pages.

There are also a number of payment options including an interest-free payment plan with a monthly direct debit payment.

If your employer is willing to fund your course, we can help you to arrange this.

Upon successful completion of this course you may choose to seek out employment as a teaching assistant, learning support assistant or special needs assistant. Alternatively, you may wish to progress onto our Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification.
