Level 3 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing

This advanced course is designed to prepare you for a successful career as an employed and/or self-employed Hairdresser/Stylist.

Based in our commercial salon, you will practise cutting, colouring, basic colour correction, and styling on paying clients whilst providing a first-class hairdressing salon experience.

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
  • Hairdressing consultation support for colleagues
  • Colour hair to create a variety of looks
  • Cut women’s hair to create a variety of looks
  • Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques
  • Promote and sell products and services to clients
  • Creative hairdressing design skills
  • Bridal hairstyling
  • Research in the hair and beauty sector

You will be continually assessed throughout the course, completing all of your assessments on a commercial client (paying customer).

You will also build an evidence-based portfolio of work, to capture the practical skills and experience that you have developed on your course.

You should have four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, and a level 2 Hairdressing qualification.

The course fee is £3,345. You may be eligible for funding depending on your personal circumstances and subject to a fee assessment during the enrolment process. For further details, please visit our financial support pages.

If you are aged 19 or over, you could also choose to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your course fees enabling you to study now, pay later. Loan eligibility isn’t dependent on income or employment status and there is no credit check. Loan repayments don’t start until you have finished your course and earn over £25,000 per year.

Students who complete this course are eligible to become a graduate State Registered Hairdresser (SRH) with The Hairdressing Council.

As a senior hairdresser/stylist, you could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • Commercial hair salons
  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
  • Product manufacturing and training
  • Television, film, theatre and media
  • Cruise liners
  • Hospitals/care homes
  • Armed services
  • HM Prison Service

Additional Information

As part of this programme, you are required to wear a uniform (tunic), which will be worn with black trousers or a skirt and a full black shoe. Our recommended uniform supplier is Florence Roby. There is also a kit required to complete your assessments which can be purchased from our recommended supplier, Dennis Williams. More information will be provided during the application process and you may be eligible for a bursary to cover these costs.
