Preparing for Work in Facilities and Cleaning (Level 1)

This course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and resilience to work in the cleaning and facilities industry, ensuring sites are cleaned and maintained to a high standard.

The course covers the principles of key operations including managing waste and sustainable use of resources, cleaning in specialised areas, and safe use of equipment and products in line with health and safety procedures.

More information

This course has flexible start dates throughout the year and will take up to 30 hours to complete, over 5 days, in the classroom. However, flexible learning can be offered, and more information can be provided on enquiry or at enrolment.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens, WA10 1PP. The course can also be delivered at a variety of our other campus locations.

Topics covered include:

  • Environmental awareness, sustainability, and waste management
  • Time management skills
  • Working in a team
  • Customer service skills
  • Solving problems at work
  • Maintenance of a safe, hygienic, and secure environment
  • Manual handling
  • COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health)
  • Health and safety
  • Fire safety
Students will be assessed through online assessments at the end of each unit and completion of a workbook.
No previous qualifications are necessary.

You may be eligible for funding depending on your personal circumstances and subject to a fee assessment during the enrolment process. For further details, visit our dedicated Adult Financial support page.

You can progress on to employment or further accredited courses, depending on your goals. Your tutor will discuss this with you at the end of your course.

Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP)

We offer this course as a Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP), working in partnership with many local employers who currently have job opportunities available and guarantee learners an interview on completion of the course.
