GemmaAdult Hairdressing student Gemma from Windle, St Helens has pledged to undertake a sponsored walk in a bid to raise vital funds for the Neonatal Unit at Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

Gemma, 31 originally joined St Helens College early last year to undertake her English and maths GCSEs whilst pregnant with her son. Her son, Alexandros arrived 6 weeks early and because of his premature birth, needed additional care and attention, including spending a short time in an incubator to help bring up his temperature and help him with jaundice.

Gemma said, “It was a difficult time for my family, but both my son and I received truly amazing support from the dedicated, caring team in the Neonatal Unit at the hospital. I’m doing this walk to show my gratitude to the team there and to ensure that they have the needed funds to deliver the same kind of care to others that find themselves in a similar position to me. I thought it would be a nice way of saying thank you whilst highlighting their cause.”

Since the birth of Alexandros, who is now 8 months old and doing brilliantly, Gemma has had the confidence to return to College to complete her English and maths and has now progressed onto a level 2 hairdressing course.

On Saturday 22nd April, alongside her mum and sister, Gemma will be walking from St Helens to Liverpool Women’s Hospital to raise as much money as possible for the Neonatal Unit.

We would like to wish Gemma and her family the best of luck!
