Picture of Ciara GorstGraphic design student and aspiring freelance designer, Ciara Gorst, was the recent winner of St Helens College’s corporate Christmas card competition with her sparkly cracker design.

Having received some fantastic submissions from Art and Design and Graphic Design students, Ciara’s entry was chosen to represent the College, being produced as a printed card as well as electronically. She also had the opportunity to progress and finalise her concept, by working alongside an experienced Graphic Designer in the industry.

Ciara, aged 17, joined the level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Graphic Design from Cansfield High School and is hoping to undertake an apprenticeship, to combine her passion for both computing and design. She first heard about St Helens College at a careers evening hosted at Cansfield High School and after speaking to the School Liaison Team about her interests and ambitions, she soon realised that studying Graphic Design was the next step to take upon finishing school.

Ciara, from Wigan, said, “I have had so many fantastic opportunities to work on projects with both external and internal organisations, which has helped me to build my work portfolio and experience working on live briefs and deadlines.”

She added, “The tutors have great employer links, are really supportive and encourage group collaboration so that everyone on the course has the opportunity to help each other and work together.”

Ciara enjoys being creative and in her spare time, she is an enthusiastic photographer, often taking photos of places she visits, manipulating them using editing software and sharing the finished result on her Instagram and Tumblr.

She also had the opportunity to collaborate on a project with student, Ross Kelly, creating a winning logo design which has since featured on printed merchandise to help raise money for Alder Hey Children’s Charity and The Sick Children’s Trust.

Graham Williams, Graphic Design Tutor at St Helens College, said, “Ciara is such a determined and dedicated student. She has fantastic ideas that are meticulously researched and a great eye for detail. Some of the work that she has produced is incredible and she has a very bright future ahead of her.”

Ciara’s festive card will be distributed to key stakeholder’s including, staff, students, employers, local MPs and councillors.
