Haircuts for the homelessIt was heart-warming sight at St Helens College as students from our level 2 Barbering course teamed up with local charity, The Hope Centre. They welcomed service users from across St Helens, to deliver what they do best, a pamper and a haircut.

The initiative was organised by Hair and Beauty Programme Leader Pj Bacon, after the idea was sparked by our amazing students, who were keen to put their skills to good use.

The Hope Centre and their users were welcomed to our commercial salon, The Lounge, where they were treated to day of pampering, receiving: haircuts, hand massages, manicures, hot towel shaves, and a cut and blow-dry from students.

To make their experience that extra bit special, staff and students kindly prepared a feast of well enjoyed refreshments, including hot drinks and sweet treats, to enjoy whilst they received their treatments.

The initiative was delivered by two apprentices who currently work in local barbers across St Helens, as well as our full-time students who are currently study on the level 2 Barbering course. After the success, the Hair and Beauty department are keen to grow their newfound relationship with The Hope Centre, with plans of utilising their facilities to reach out to those less fortunate.

PJ Bacon, Hair and Beauty Programme Leader, commented: “The idea came solely from our amazing students. I love to get them involved with extra enrichment activities, whether it be competitions or events, it’s great to put their mixture of abilities to the test. So when they put this forward, I got straight on the phone to Sarah at the Hope Centre and arranged it. It’s something we hope to continue and grow.”

Sarah Barton, Hope House Centre Manager, added: “We were so pleased when PJ and Lindsey from the College got in touch. We love working with the community. It encourages the people we work with that they are cared about and that they are important. For us their wellbeing and self-confidence is massive, and initiatives like this is a huge part of building and maintaining it. It’s great that they can come and use the facilities like these. We’re really excited to see where this new relationship goes and hope that it’s the beginning of a beautiful partnership.”
