Picture of our cover star, Tony

Having worked in various roles within social value for over 20 years, Tony has always had an interest in people. After gaining employment with Galliford Try as a Social Value and Engagement Manager, he wanted to develop the skill set to support him more effectively in this role.

Tony explains, “Galliford Try place a great emphasis on their people and wellbeing, so I wanted to gain the knowledge to offer advice, guidance, counselling and support to our staff.”

Having already completed an impressive seven courses at the College throughout his career, Tony, with the support of his employer, was able to fit the distance learning course around his work commitments.

Reflecting on his experience, Tony says, “The course was challenging but the online resources, tutor support and feedback helped me to achieve each module quickly and plan my assignments and reading time perfectly.”

He adds, “I particularly enjoyed the sections around self-evaluation, planning and bias attitudes – things we all take for granted at times – but I have certainly learned the best way to offer counselling that helps the ‘helpee’.”

Speaking of the positive impact of this course, Tony says, “We have now established a health and wellbeing forum to support our employees and subcontractors. The course has offered me a different perspective on both my life and the lives of others. I look forward to continuing my learning at the College by progressing on to the level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills course.”

Hoping to inspire others to consider undertaking a distance learning course, Tony says, “The online platform is easy to navigate, the course materials are interesting and factual, support is provided at every turn, and you can learn at a time that suits you – what more could you need!”
