English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) can help you if English is not your first language and you are living or planning to settle in the UK.

The course is offered at different levels to improve your English Language skills.

During the course, you will develop your speaking and listening, reading and writing, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation for communication in everyday life, education and work.

More information

We have various start dates throughout the year and the course takes up to one year complete.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens WA10 1PP.

ESOL courses are designed to help you improve your level of English, to get more out of your life in the UK and to make it easier to:

  • talk to doctors, teachers, bank or shop assistants
  • fill in administrative forms
  • understand laws and customs
  • help your children with homework
  • study or train for a qualification
  • look for employment or apply for citizenship

Courses follow the national ESOL Skills for Life curriculum and you will be taught all four skills of language: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. You will sit an examination for each of these skills.

You will be required to do homework and to study outside of class time, as this is an important part of the learning.

You will have access to the College’s library to use the computers for college work, to study in the library or to borrow books or magazines.

Before you start an ESOL programme with us you will have an interview and assessment to ensure that you are placed at the correct level to help you progress and achieve.

ESOL courses are free for EU citizens or those with a right to remain. An eligibility assessment will be carried out once we receive your details.

Improving your English can help you get more out of your life here in the UK. It will also help if you want to improve your CV, or apply to become a British citizen.

Our ESOL courses can also help provide a pathway to a wider range of courses in the college.
