This one year course is designed to give learners the opportunity to gain an understanding and knowledge of science principles and practices, supporting progression on to the Level 3 Extended Diploma.

You will benefit from a practical and applied approach, learning in fully equipped laboratories and taught by tutors who are experts in their field.

The course will start in September and take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

The course consists of 12 units, 8 mandatory and 4 optional:

The mandatory modules are:

  • Principles of Science
  • Chemistry and our Earth
  • Energy and our Universe
  • Biology and our Environment
  • Applications of Chemical Substances
  • Applications of Physical Science
  • Health Applications of Life Science
  • Scientific Skills

The optional units are:

  • The Living Body
  • Further Chemistry
  • Exploring our Universe
  • Chemical Analysis and Detection

Assessment is continuous throughout the course by a range of methods including assignments, evidence portfolios, projects, case studies, practical exercises and external tests and set tasks.

You should have three GCSEs at grade 3 or above.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your course when you join us.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. On successful completion of this course, you may wish to continue your learning by progressing on to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science.
