Level 3 Diploma in Barbering

This advanced, technical qualification is the perfect platform to launch a career as an employed or self-employed men’s hairdresser.

You will explore everything from advanced cutting and trimming skills to salon management and providing first-class client consultations.

This qualification is based on barbering National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the British Barbering Association (BBA) as being fit for purpose to prepare you for a career as a senior men’s hairdresser.

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

During this course, you will cover the following:

  • Health and safety
  • Client consultation
  • Salon management
  • Advanced cutting and trimming skills
  • Selling products and services to clients

All work is continually assessed, and you will undertake practical assessments, observations, portfolio of evidence, written tasks and online testing.

You should have GCSEs at grade 3 or above in English and maths and have successfully completed a level 2 barbering qualification.

A work placement within a barber shop is advisable as this will help to build on knowledge and skills to support the full completion of this course.

The course fee is £3,345. You may be eligible for funding depending on your personal circumstances and subject to a fee assessment during the enrolment process. For further details, please visit our financial support pages.

If you are aged 19 or over, you could also choose to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your course fees enabling you to study now, pay later. Loan eligibility isn’t dependent on income or employment status and there is no credit check. Loan repayments don’t start until you have finished your course and earn over £25,000 per year.

As a senior hairdresser/stylist, students could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • commercial salons
  • specialist African type hair salons
  • independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
  • television, film, theatre and media
  • armed services
  • HM prison service
  • cruise liners
  • hospitals/care homes

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare students for employment, students may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at level 4 in one or more of the following areas:

  • salon management
  • hair colour correction
  • specialist hair and scalp services
  • advanced hair styling

Additional Information

As part of this programme you are required to wear a uniform. There is also a kit required to complete your assessments which can be purchased from a recommended supplier. You may be eligible for financial support to cover these costs.
