This course is designed to prepare you to enter the public sector or uniformed service of your choice. Whether you choose to secure employment straight away or progress on to university first, our tutors prepare you mentally and physically for either option.

While developing your physical fitness in our gym, studio and the great outdoors, you will learn what it takes to be a successful leader, gaining crucial communication, map reading and navigation skills. You will also explore current affairs, conflict management and international organisations.

The course will start in September and will take two years to complete.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

During this course, you will cover the following:

Year 1

  • Develop aspects of fitness

  • Equality and diversity
  • Mental wellbeing
  • Understand conflict management
  • Sports coaching
  • Skills for water-based
  • Crime scene investigation (CSI)

Year 2

  • Services hierarchy
  • Telecommunications
  • Influence of UK government
  • Emergency planning
  • Impacts of war
  • Skills for land-based
  • Understanding discipline
  • UK legal systems
  • Volunteering

You will be assessed through a combination of presentations, practical observations, simulations as well as written work, poster design and discussions. There are no final examinations on this course.

You should have four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English or maths.

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. Upon completion of this course, you will have gained the necessary skill set to confidently tackle the recruitment and selection process for the armed forces or uniformed service of your choice.
