Introduction to Catering Operations

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

A career that inspires creativity, provides an opportunity to meet new friends, and may open other doors such as starting your own business - tea shop, small restaurant or guest house? Then this introductory catering course could be for you.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course has flexible start dates throughout the year. You will attend College one day per week for three weeks.

This course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

The course will focus on developing your customer service skills, food hygiene, preparing and cooking simple cafeteria food i.e. home-made soups, chicken, leek and ham pie or simple cakes such as banana bread etc.

You will learn the skills of serving customers and will gain a brief introduction to Barista skills as well as understanding the basics of running a café stile/ tea shop operation. Students will also learn basic costings.

How is it assessed?

There are no formal assessments for this course the emphasis is on learning skills.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

There are no formal entry requirements. All you will need is commitment and enthusiasm, able to work as part of a team and should have a passion for food.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

This course could be the very first step on the ladder towards gaining a career in the Hospitality Industry. The industry is one of the fastest growing in the world. In England alone there are well over 100,000 businesses employing a workforce of over 1 million and there are still shortages for skilled chefs and well qualified managers.

Previous students have gained employment in a whole range of different places such as hotels, restaurants, cruise liners, pubs and even as celebrity chefs on television.
