Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

This qualification will provide learners with a comprehensive and full understanding of how to conduct counselling sessions with clients in an ethical, effective and safe way.

During the course you will gain knowledge of therapeutic models and ethical frameworks, including the importance of settings, supervision and casework management.

You will also explore the impact diverse culture and heritage can have on the client counsellor relationship in a multicultural society, as well the importance of research in counselling and how to increase self-awareness.

This course, when combined with a level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills, or an equivalent qualification, meets the basic training requirement for recognition as a qualified counsellor and also contains supervised placement hours.

A placement of 100+ hours and 1.5 - 2 hours of supervision per month is required for successful completion of the course, in addition to the hours of study in college.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take two years to complete. You will attend College on a Tuesday, from 1.00pm - 8.00pm.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA0 1PP.

What will I study?

To achieve this qualification, the following units will be completed:

  • Professional, organisational issues in counselling
  • Counselling in a diverse society
  • Counselling theory
  • Advanced counselling skills
  • Self-awareness for counsellors
  • Research methodologies in counselling
  • Counselling placement (100 hours)

How is it assessed?

Assessment is by internal assessment and internal and external moderation.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

Students will have completed the level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills or equivalent. Before places are offered, applicants will be interviewed to determine their suitability to undertake this training.

What are the course fees?

The total cost of this course is £4,425.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your course fees. An Advanced Learner Loan enables you to study now, pay later. Loan eligibility is not dependent on income or employment status and there is no credit check. Loan repayments do not start until you have finished your course and earn over £25,000 per year. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be qualified as a Therapeutic Counsellor.

You may also choose to progress onto further learning to enhance the skills and knowledge of a practicing Counsellor, or work towards gaining national accreditation status with professional bodies.
