Directions is a free course aimed at young people aged 16-18, who aren't sure that they want to go to college, what they would like to study or haven't decided what career that they would like in the future.

To help you with the cost of coming to College, Directions offers:

  • A free breakfast every day at St Helens College
  • A free bus pass for your first term and a heavily discounted one after that
  • A bursary to help with any additional costs such as travelling to College, books, equipment etc. depending on your financial situation.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

Directions has various start dates throughout the year and takes around six weeks to complete with a view to continuing your studies for the rest of the year.

However, this course is very flexible and tailored to suit you, for example, you may choose to attend St Helens College three days per week or, you may prefer to have a work placement two and a half days per week with half a day in St Helens College helping you to improve your English and maths. Either way, your key-worker will be there to help and support you from start to finish.

What will I study?

Directions will help you to gain a level 1 Preparation for Education and Employment qualification and will also help you to improve your English and maths.

You will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience alongside your studying in a vocational area of your interest.

How is it assessed?

You will build a portfolio of work which shows what you have achieved throughout the course and you will also receive regular, informal reviews.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You don't need any qualifications to join Directions, just a desire to make a positive change in your life.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have completed the course, you could move on to a traineeship, an apprenticeship, a full-time course at St Helens College or into employment.
