Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering

Designed for students looking to launch a career in the engineering industry, this advanced course covers a wide range of industry areas such as engineering design, innovation and new technologies, civil engineering, rail engineering and aerospace engineering.

You will develop your knowledge and practical skills in our specialist workshops, whilst undertaking additional maths qualifications, should you wish to progress on to university.

Our successful alumnus, Cameron, completed this course and has now launched his own successful heritage engineering restoration business. He has even appeared on TV in a Channel 4 documentary!

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course will start in September and will take two years to complete.

What will I study?

You will cover the following units:

  • Engineering maths and principles
  • Engineering materials
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Engineering design
  • Electronics control and instrumentation
  • Innovation and new technologies
  • Power and energy in engineering
  • Core maths for preparation to work and progression to university

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by an exam and will also undertake a synoptic project, where you will design and make a product.

Formative assessments will take place throughout the year to help you develop your skills and knowledge.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and science and a grade 5 or above in maths.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2022), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

You could accrue up to 112 UCAS Tariff Points on successful completion of this course, to support you to progress on to university. You could choose to enhance your knowledge and skills by studying a HNC Engineering qualification at University Centre St Helens.

Alternatively, you may choose to look for employment in the industry or undertake a higher apprenticeship to gain further qualifications whilst earning a wage.
