GCSE English (Online)

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

This online course is ideal for those who struggle to attend during normal college hours and will provide you with the opportunity to gain a GCSE in English through distance learning.

The course aims to develop skills in both spoken and written English, as well as the ability to read a wide range of written texts analytically.

This qualification will enable adults of all abilities to develop the skills they need to read, understand and analyse a wide range of different texts covering the 19th, 20th and 21st century time periods as well as to write clearly, coherently and accurately using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures.

GCSE English is an essential subject which forms part of the minimum entry requirements for a wide range of careers. Achieving GCSE English will benefit you both in daily life and in your career.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in November 2021 and will finish with exams, which will be held in May and June 2022.

All lessons will be available on Microsoft Teams for you to watch in your own time. There will then be online sessions one afternoon and evening each week, to provide you with the opportunity to speak to your tutor who can provide help and support.

Regular work will be set and thorough feedback given, so you can see what grade you are working towards.

What will I study?

You will study the AQA curriculum.

Topics covered include:

  • Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing
    • Section A: Reading of one literature fiction text
    • Section B: Writing a descriptive or narrative piece

  • Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives
    • Section A: Reading one non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text
    • Section B: Writing to present a viewpoint

How is it assessed?

You will need to sit two exams at the end of the course:

  • English Paper 1 - 18th May 2022
  • English Paper 2 - 10th June 2022

These are national exams and the dates cannot be changed. You will need to attend these exam dates to be able to pass the course.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You will need a basic understanding of English. Learners who have achieved a GCSE English grade D/3 or a Level 1 in Functional Skills are usually suitable to enrol on to this course.

What are the course fees?

This course is free to study providing you do not hold a grade 4 (equivalent to grade C) or above at GCSE level.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Gaining a GCSE in English can lead to several progression opportunities.

This qualification will enhance your CV and improve your employability prospects.

You may also decide to undertake further study in this area, such as the Maths GCSE, or progress on to further or higher education.
