Level 1 Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills (Adult Course)

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

You will be learning about all aspects of horticulture on this course, including how to grow plants from seeds, landscaping, looking after turf, and using tools and equipment.

It will give you your first insight into working in such a varied and rewarding industry, as you contribute to maintaining the green areas in and around the local area.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete. You will attend College on a Tuesday or Thursday, from 9.00am - 4.00pm.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Maintaining health and safety working practices
  • Assisting with establishing plants
  • Assisting with maintaining plants

In addition to the above, you will also have the opportunity to choose from the following:

  • Assisting with propagation of plants by seed
  • Assisting with propagation of plants by vegetative methods
  • Assisting with identifying the presence of and controlling common pests and diseases
  • Maintaining turf
  • Use of horticulture machinery i.e. strimmers, cultivator, hedge trimmers

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by project work and practical demonstrations. There are no formal exams.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You do not need any formal qualifications, just passion and a commitment to your studies.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have completed this course, you will have the opportunity to progress on to one of our level 2 courses. However, you may choose to look for a position in the industry at an assistant level.
