Level 2 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills

Throughout this course, you will enhance your practical skills in the green spaces across the borough while developing in-depth knowledge of plant identification and soil testing (PH).

You will also gain experience of handling a variety of tools and equipment such as hedge trimmers, mowers and strimmers.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Preparing grounds for seeding or planting
  • Planting container grown subjects
  • Applying organic mulch to a bed or border
  • Water a bed, border or area of plants in containers
  • Using hand-held equipment i.e. hedge trimmers, strimmers, lawn mowers
  • Soil testing (PH)
  • Creating hanging baskets
  • Plant identification

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by project work and practical demonstrations. There are no formal exams.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have successfully achieved a level 1 Horticulture qualification.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2020), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have completed this practical course, you will be ready to tackle a more advanced level of study, by progressing on to the level 3 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture.

Alternatively, you might decide to look for your first exciting job in the industry.
