Level 1 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills (Adult Course)

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

This course is a great introduction to the industry and the practical skills required to progress on to the next level of study.

You will explore everything from creating hanging baskets and planting containers to preparing grounds for seeding or planting and applying organic mulch correctly.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete. You will attend College on a Tuesday and Thursday, from 9.00am - 4.00pm.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

During this course, you could cover the following units:

  • Preparing grounds for seeding or planting
  • Assisting with identifying the presence of and controlling common pests and diseases
  • Planting container grown subjects
  • Applying organic mulch to a bed or border
  • Maintaining turf
  • Water a bed, border or area of plants in containers
  • Using hand-held equipment i.e. hedge trimmers, strimmers, lawn mowers
  • Soil testing (PH)
  • Creating hanging baskets
  • Plant identification

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by project work and practical demonstrations. There are no formal exams.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You do not need any formal qualifications, just passion and a commitment to your studies.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have completed this course, you could progress on to:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills
  • Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture
