Level 2 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills (Adult Course)

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

This course is designed for those who have completed the level 1 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills and would like to enhance their knowledge, skills and experience.

You will be learning about planting and caring for the flowers, trees and shrubs in the green areas in our towns and cities.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete. You will attend College on a Tuesday and Thursday, from 9.00am - 4.00pm.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Preparing grounds for seeding or planting
  • Planting container grown subjects
  • Applying organic mulch to a bed or border
  • Water a bed, border or area of plants in containers
  • Using hand-held equipment i.e. hedge trimmers, strimmers, lawn mowers
  • Soil testing (PH)
  • Creating hanging baskets
  • Plant identification

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by project work and practical demonstrations. There are no formal exams.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have completed a level 1 horticulture qualification.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have completed this practical course, you will be ready to tackle a more advanced level of study, including other horticulture courses at level 3.
