Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Applied Science

This one-year course provides a strong introduction to scientific theory, whilst supporting you to develop practical and transferable skills, to enable you to progress on to the level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science.

Based in our fully-equipped laboratories, you will undertake a variety of investigative projects and practical tasks such as chemical analysis, where you will synthesise and analyse aspirin, whilst gaining insight from our industry expert tutors.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

The course consists of 6 units, 4 mandatory, and 2 optional.

The mandatory modules are:

  • Principles and Applications of Science I
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Applications

The optional units are:

  • Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques
  • Disease and Infection
  • Applications of Organic Chemistry
  • Practical Chemical Analysis
  • Industrial Chemical Reactions
  • Applications of Medical Physics

How is it assessed?

Assessment is continuous throughout the course by a range of methods including assignments, evidence portfolios, projects, case studies, practical exercises and external tests and set tasks.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English, maths and science. A level 2 BTEC qualification (science-based) at merit or above will also be considered.

Achieving good standards of English and maths is a key requirement for many employers, as well as for any higher education courses you may wish to progress onto. It you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

If you already have a grade 4 or above in English and/or maths but wish to achieve a higher grade, we can also support you to do this.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2023), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

On successful completion of this course, you may wish to continue your learning by progressing on to the level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science, which will enable you to progress into higher education.

Alternatively, you may wish to gain employment within the science industry as a laboratory technician.
